ASSOCIATION OF INDUSTRIAL TRUCK TRAINERS

Accreditation by the AITT

The AITT is a founding member of the Accrediting Bodies Association (ABA), delivering accreditation to our training providers for over 30 years.

Any qualified AITT instructor can apply to become an accredited training provider. AITT Accreditation has countless benefits for training providers, such as inclusion in the AITT Online Training Directory.

As an accredited training provider, you will consistently maintain standards of training, beyond the required minimum, with all registered instructors and companies accepting that their activities will be independently monitored.

Qualified Operators

A fully qualified operator is someone who has successfully passed basic operator training, specific job training and on the job familiarisation training.

Authorisation must be granted by the employer to operate equipment within the work site.

As an industry, we bear witness to over 1300 fork lift truck accidents a year, which means on average there are five accidents every workday in the UK.

Proper training is essential for all types of material handling equipment.

Points to consider about Material Handling Equipment Operator.

In any manufacturing organisation, material handling activities are found to be unproductive. On one hand, these are expensive by nature whereas on the other hand, these add very little to the value of the product. It has been generally observed that material handling cost is 10% to 30% of the total labour costs.

Therefore, there is an urgent necessity to review the internal material handling system intensively and develop such a system that will reduce not only the unnecessary movement of material from one place to another but at the same time will save the total costs. New types of material handling devices are being continuously developed with higher degrees of mechanisation so as to achieve more productivity, create more flexibility in operations and obtaining substantial reduction in costs of production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need driving experience to operate a forklift?

A: No, formal driving experience is not necessary to operate a forklift truck. While having driving experience may facilitate the learning process, it is not an essential requirement.

Q: How long is a forklift license valid for?

A: Technically, there is no specific “forklift license.” Operators receive a certificate of basic operator training, although it is commonly referred to as a license or ticket. As per HSE guidance, it is recommended that all operators attend a refresher course every 3-5 years.

Q: If I pass a counterbalance course, can I operate any type of forklift?

A: No, different types of lift trucks are categorised to ensure certification aligns with the specific equipment being used. If an operator completes a counterbalance course and intends to operate a reach truck, they must undergo a conversion course to transition to the different equipment.

Q: Is forklift driving considered a skilled job?

A: Yes, while forklift operating may not generally be perceived as a highly skilled profession, it does require skill, considerable concentration, and a strong commitment to health and safety to operate under pressure within busy work environments.

Q: My friend claims that driving forklifts is an easy job. Does this mean anyone can do it?

A: No, driving a forklift can be hazardous not only for the operator but also for those working alongside them and even members of the public. Every forklift operator should undergo proper training before gaining the opportunity to perfect their skills through practice and experience. While proficiency may improve over time, leading some to believe it is an easy job, it should be acknowledged that operating a forklift is far from easy.
